Liverpool 4-0 Blackburn

No Gerrard, No Problem. We Emphatically Stroll in the Prem Yet Again.

A 4-0 thrashing of Blackburn this morning was a welcome sight after a few days of not-so-good news. Losing 1-3 to Chelsea and hearing about Gerrard’s groin injury was, pun very much intended, a kick to the groin. It has been a fabulous season no matter how you slice it, and regardless of what happens in the Champions League this season has been all about finally making that step as legitimate title challengers rather than title hopefuls or title dreamers.

In this particular match against Blackburn at Anfield, it was essential that we grabbed the early goal in order to settle the nerves of the supporters, and thusly the players out on the pitch. In an emotional occasion (the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster), Torres scored after only five minutes. That was not only ideal, but necessary in taking the game to a side that was CLEARLY set out to frustrate us. That tactic can work against Liverpool, but not when we take the lead so quickly. And what a goal it was! When Carragher’s long, accurate ball found the chest of Torres and out towards the outside corner of the box, I didn’t really expect him to then turn on it and fire an unstoppable half-volley past a dispairing Robinson. It was a magnificent strike, truly worthy of any praise you’ll read about. If that goal doesn’t make it into the top 10 goals of the season in my yearly purchase of “Premier League Goals of the Season” DVD, I will send it back in a paper bag full of feces. If I could set it on fire, I would. But I won’t. That’s not realistic. Come on!

So 1-0 up, and Liverpool were cruising. We had SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES to score… but couldn’t. Well, until Torres popped up with a fantastic header, mind you. That goal was also crucial, because now we could relax and play our game in the second half. You always have the feeling against teams like Blackburn that 1-0 isn’t enough because of the threat of set-pieces. After the Chelsea loss, you dread to think of another set-piece goal because that’s all you would hear about in the media. Zonal marking this, man marking is better that… it gets rather old and I would prefer to just move on to another topic. I would say that, though, wouldn’t I? :)

2-0 up at the half, and then about 40 minutes of lethargic football from both sides… then Daniel Agger struck back with a 30 yard corkscrew that was reminiscent of his West Ham goal in 2006. It was not just a glorious strike, but one that the man personally needed. It has not been the best of seasons for our young Dane. Injuries, lack of form at crucial times, and the play of Martin Skrtel have hampered his chances of becoming a Liverpool regular. So to score a wondergoal will do him no harm whatsoever. Then again, when WOULD that do any harm? Regardless, it was 3-0 and soon it would become 4 thanks to Lucas’ header across goal that David Ngog nodded in with the greatest of ease from about a foot out.

4-0 was fitting, and it temporarily put us at the top of the league. COME ON YOU REDS!
