Tevez to Anfield? Interesting Thought…

The news that was splashing all across the papers today was that Rafa is interested in bringing want-away Tevez to Anfield. Given that United will no longer “own” him (they had him on loan, as it was) and that Tevez wants more regular football, Rafa actually has a bit of a chance here. Plus, don’t you think that Tevez just might want to reunite with good friend Javier Mascherano?

There are a few minor problems, however… if you want to call them minor. First, there’s that whole “I don’t want to piss off the United fans” issue. I could see how this might be a small roadblock, but it didn’t stop Barmby in the Everton  to Liverpool transfer in 2000! The other issue is the asking price. Risky spending 25 mil on a striker who isn’t really a massive goalscorer, AND given the Robbie Keane debacle. Tevez is different than Keane, but one might suggest that Gerrard and Tevez could potentially be trying to utilize the same space… which would be a massive problem. The transfer fee could also be an issue, as we aren’t exactly “rolling in it” at the moment. Then again, neither are United yet they could splash 30 mil on the ineffectual Berbatov. So crazier things could happen.

The positives on a possible Tevez deal are quite numerous. He has the work ethic of a Dirk Kuyt, but the finishing is far more refined. He pops up at important times. He is selfish in front of goal, which is what we need in a striker. He is hungry for success. He has HAD success. And the list goes on.

Ultimately, though, it is down to Rafa. Does he want him? Does he rate our side as something other than a 4-5-1 side? I’m not so sure. Because of this doubt, I’m not going to get my hopes up. But because we don’t have to deal directly with Manchester United, anything is possible here.

Regardless, it is an interesting piece of gossip. One that I welcome far, far more than that of Roque Santa Cruz. David Villa would be even better, but that would be silly money!!!
