Rafa: “We Must Sell to Buy.” What He Really Meant: “I Have a Few Lads Who Aren’t Cutting It.”

Once again, a silly season of outrageous proportions is coming soon. Could Liverpool sign David Villa, David Silva, AND Carlos Tevez? Will people in chatrooms predict insane formations that ALWAYS feature three forwards, ignoring the basic philosophies of a Liverpool team? And naturally, will people also claim that Rafa will be off and that it all doesn’t matter anyhow?

We are just about at this point of the year that I dread. The season ends, the rumors fly, and more often than not nothing happens for a good two months while you wish the season would just start again and that at least just ONE signing would be worth your hours of combing the internet for a good transfer rumor… not to mention a transfer itself.

Today, Rafa Benitez said in so many words that the club would have to sell fringe players before they could bring in their targets.  In the BBC, he said,

“I will have an idea of how much we will have to spend.

“I think we’d have to sell players to increase the money we’ll need but at the moment we’re not talking about names and money.”

The Spaniard added: “We are working on targets and we will try to do things as quickly and cheaply as possible.”

When you read between the lines, you can see he wants a world class target or two (like Villa, Silva, or Tevez) and that he would have to sell a few players to raise the money. He isn’t talking about a Torres, Gerrard, Mascherano, Reina or Alonso here. He is most CERTAINLY referring to a Ryan Babel type. And by “Babel type,” I really mean just Ryan Babel. He’s as good as gone. As is Dossena, methinks. The fans would hope Lucas, but he’ll stay. Rafa sees something in him, and a third season could really prove whether he is worth it or not (as millions of Liverpool supporters groan).

We’ll see what happens, but the silly season just got a nudge in the right direction.
