One of the more popular threads in the “gossip” pages in the British media over the past few days is the possible arrival of Glen Johnson at Anfield. I’m not too bothered by a price tag, because if this move happens, I think we will strengthen a position that is strong, but not strong enough in our squad. Arbeloa is a decent player, don’t get me wrong, but Glen Johnson could take us to that next level. As far as right backs are concerned, Johnson has been the best one in England for about 2-3 seasons running.
He is athletic, ENGLISH (which will matter soon, if I’m not mistaken), and is known for fantastic delivery. And what about that goal he scored this season against Hull? QUALITY. One of the good things about this deal is that we could use some of the money Portsmouth owes us for Crouch (10 mil) and use it towards this signing, meaning we could get him relatively for cheap as far as money in our budget is concerned. And let’s face it, Johnson is a freakin’ beast.
Tactically, Johnson’s presence could prove to be a huge hit for Rafa. He loves to push up the wing- like Arbeloa does- but is also willing to whip in crosses deep into the box… something Arbeloa is not so well-versed at. Finnan was EXCELLENT at this, and I feel like we have missed that. With Aurelio on the left and Johnson on the right, we could have some of the best crossing fullbacks in the Premiership. It would be lovely to see that kind of element added to our play. Arbeloa may be better in smaller spaces (which is quite impressive when you watch it), but Johnson is more dynamic… and dynamic play is probably what we need to push on to that next level in quality. We have a few positions where that is needed, including on the right wing and at backup striker.
