Today’s pre-season match against Rapid Vienna was one of those rare occasions where I was unable to watch or listen to the match. As it turns out, this probably wasn’t the worst thing in the world. Losing 1-0, to a free-kick as it happens, is not the best start to a pre-season after a 0-0 draw, but 0 goals in two matches is not such a horrific thing because after all it is just pre-season, and we’re playing a lot of our fringe players.
The important thing to recognize is this: our fitness levels will improve and our players will wear off their rust. Our Spanish players did not play, despite being there, because of needing to recover just a bit longer from Confederations Cup action. Add to that the small injuries sustained by Glen Johnson and Stephen Darby, and no wonder we looked a bit threadbare! From the look of the match report by lfc.tv, it seemed like chances were not at all abundant… but that our defense looked solid.
Regardless, I’ll hold out judgment until we play in Thailand with our full squad. Until then, it’s not worth the words because it won’t ultimately matter… unless, of course, all of our Spanish players fall ill. Which won’t happen.
