This is why I hate the summer in the world of football. It isn’t the lack of football itself, though that is an unwelcomed aspect of the summer, but it is the rumors that consistently link my favorite players away from the club. Last summer, the departure of Alonso was an unfortunate rumor that never seemed to go away. This summer, we are faced with the same nonsense. But just like last summer, is it ACTUALLY nonsense? Does Xabi really want to go or not? His quotes are not filling me with confidence, nor are they filling me with massive feelings of doubt.
And this is just what the media loves… UNCERTAINTY. Today, Xabi Alonso gave us all with a nice little bit of doubt with the statement that, “it is not up to me. It is up to the clubs involved.” CRAP. That means he’s not only contemplating it, but that he’ll go if the offer is right! It also means he is happy to stay if need be, but damn… it would be a big loss. Some might say that the price could ultimately make it worth its while, but his age makes it far from that. As a player still in his mid-20s, it’s not like he’s in the twilight of his career. He still has a solid 5-7 years of LFC football in him, and I think these 5-7 years could be our most fruitful since the late 1980s. Honestly. And Alonso is a big part of this. So to lose him now… well… it goes without saying that it would be a truly shitty situation (pardon my English).
More than anything, I would like positive stories about Liverpool Football Club in the media, not ones of departures. Stories of possible entries from David Silva and Ashley Young are of high quality and high optimism… not ones of Xabi or Masch leaving.
Neither Rafa nor Xabi have stated anything for us to feed on, but as they say… there is no smoke without fire. And I have a feeling there are a few flames burning right now.
