And… boom goes the dynamite. Alonso speculation finally ends… but it isn’t good news

So much for speculation. The sad news has finally reached its epic conclusion. Xabi Alonso has indeed handed in an official transfer request, and a move to Real Madrid looks imminent. Some say 25 mil, others say 28 mil, but knowing my beloved Liverpool in the transfer market, we’ll probably send him to Real for 15 mil and get Guti in exchange. In all seriousness, though, we’ll probably pay 22 mil because we ALWAYS get boned in the transfer market. It’s just part of who we are.

Xabi Alonso training with Liverpool Football Club on the day it is reported he put in a formal transfer request to Real Madrid

This news is not unexpected, mind you. It has been the case for probably 18 months now. It’s just that before it was Juventus and because we were going to get Gareth Barry. Now it is because Real Madrid could buy the entire Kingdom of God, not to mention any footballer they so choose. What did Florentio Perez do, anyhow, to get all this money? And has he not learned his lesson? Real Madrid can take all of the players they want, but it won’t make them winners. In fact, everyone will be gunning for them… even more so than usual. They still stink in defense, as well.

All of that said, Alonso will help their cause and I am deeply disappointed to see him on his way out. His quality was very apparent out on the pitch, and it isn’t the same when he isn’t out there. Some of his goals have been legendary, and he’s been a massive part of our success in the five years Rafa has been at the helm. But all good things come to an end, and this one has looked likely. Sad, but likely. I almost don’t even know what to say because it’s one of those departures that you can understand but are pissed off about. I’m torn. I want Xabi to succeed, but on the same token I’m furious at him for leaving. At least he’s not staying in England! That helps. If we face Real in the Champions League, though, you can bet he’ll get a GOOD reception, and not an Owen-like chorus of jeers.

Alonso hasn’t been sold YET, but I’ll keep you posted when he does. And what terrible return we get for him.
