I’ve already written about this, so I won’t get much further into it than needed, but Xabi Alonso’s transfer is now agreed and done. The fee is BELIEVED to be around 30 million pounds, which is far more prolific than I expected actually, but it is still a very sad day for Liverpool supporters. Have we been expecting it? Absolutely. Is it still heartwrenching? Yes. There isn’t much that can be done about it, though, and any replacement surely won’t be as good of a visionary midfielder as Xabi. But all good sides go through these transitions and adapt. When Manchester United lost Ronaldo this summer, most of us thought they would be worse for wear because of it… but when I relfect upon what’s going on there, they’ve still got 10 other players out there who helped them win the title. And nobody is saying they haven’t got a chance, even though he was CLEARLY their best player. With us, Xabi is very good but was perhaps our 4th best player behind Gerrard, Torres and Reina. Big loss, but not completely crippling.
I’m sad, but no player is bigger than the club and no loss is so damaging that all of a sudden we can’t challenge for the title. Either we get a replacement, or Lucas steps it up, OR Gerrard drops into midfield and Babel gets a shot at playing up front. Either way, I’m sure Rafa has a plan in place and has been thinking about this for quite some time!
