LFC are Breaking My Heart Right Now

I love my club, but for the love of God… what the hell are we doing out there? I am sensing a lack of cohesion, character, composure, class, and a bunch of other fancy words that start with the letter c. The big word that starts with “c” that we are lacking, however, is CONFIDENCE.

And it is breaking my heart.

After a fantastic 2008-2009 season, it is almost inconceivable to see how we have fallen so far down the table and in confidence. Our players are frustrated, and they are not assured enough in the system at the moment to swing the ball around and put together a string of passes. One could point at the loss of Alonso and the lack of “expression” from Lucas as a key issue, but I think the issue at the moment is far deeper and more unfortunate than that. I believe, and this is hard to say, that the players lack faith in the system we are playing. And that hurts, because although I firmly believe they think Rafa is top class, that they do not understand the system. Which is odd, as it worked so well last year. But when you have personnel change, like Alonso and Arbeloa leaving, it changes how you play and you must adapt. We have not filled Alonso’s boots yet, but we do not NEED to. What we NEED to do is adapt with the players we have, and having both Lucas and Mascherano sit deep and clean up is not necessary. We do not NEED to clean up. We need to push forward and try things. Is it not fitting that we cruised over Wigan (despite the 2-1 scoreline) when Lucas was not in the lineup and Rafa used Gerrard in that position? It worked like a charm.

I just hope Rafa takes heed of what has worked and doesn’t stubbornly stick with what has had us slip to 6th (or below) in the table.
