At #87, our not-often-used left back Andrea Dossena produced a stunning lob in the famous 4-1 victory at Manchester United in 2008-2009 from 30 yards out and with the most sublime technique.
Andrea Dossena “enjoyed” a short spell at Liverpool, spending 1 1/2 years with us on the bench. As it turned out though, Dossena would have one magical week with us where he scored our fourth goals in famous victories over Real Madrid and then Manchester United. This unlikely hero rarely produced moments of brilliance, but this lob against Manchester United at Old Trafford in front of their most vocal supporters (if such a thing exists) was one for the history books.
Already ahead 3-1 and with only minutes left to play, Reina’s long punt found Dossena in space, and the Italian snuck in behind John O’Shea and brilliantly lobbed the ball coolly over the head of the static Van Der Sar. It capped what was was a magnificent performance from the team, but the man himself deserved the goal given all the time he spent patiently waiting in the wings. The goal was one that basically created itself, and Dossena would have been silly not to go for it, but the composure in which he took his chance was admirable. Think of all the times you’ve seen that situation and players took a touch instead of going for goal, and then think of the amount of chances are blown because of that. AD took his chance and it paid dividends.
Why #87?
The classic nature of this excellent strike means its spot on the list was essentially guaranteed, but Manchester United really could have done better. Van Der Sar and O’Shea hardly reacted at all to the situation, and Dossena really did not have to do much about it, as it was handed to him on a plate. That said, the composure and technically-sound nature of the finish after two bounces was impressive and deserves its spot at #87 on the list.

I’d have put this goal at no 88.
