Joao Carlos Teixeira speaks about his 40-yard goal & season prospects

Today’s game against the Malaysia XI could be particularly important for one young Liverpool player. Joao Carlos Teixeira knows only too well that he’s running out of time to impress manager Brendan Rodgers, but he remains determined to do just that before the new season starts.

Our 2015-16 Premier League campaign is little more than two weeks away, so despite several encouraging moments already this summer, the 22-year-old midfielder knows that he must do more to earn his place.

Teixeira made his Premier League debut for the Reds towards the end of the 2013-14 season. He spent the following year on loan at Championship club Brighton and did well until a broken leg cruelly brought his campaign to an end.

Despite the setback, the Portuguese made a stunning recovery to be fit in time to start our opening match of the new season against the Thai All-Stars earlier this month, setting up the opening goal for Lazar Markovic.

He did well again against Felda United on Thursday, as the Reds romped to a 7-0 victory. The youngster was among those to get his name on the scoresheet, finding the net with a perfectly executed 40-yard lob.

“It was a nice goal to score,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “I saw that the goalkeeper wasn’t in a great position and I was pleased to see it go in. The support we have here is beautiful and it’s great to play in front of them.”

Asked about his future and his return from injury, he continued: “I fractured my fibula and damaged two ankle ligaments so it was a tough time. I had surgery and then my summer was spent with the Liverpool physios trying to get back fit as quickly as I possibly could.

“I didn’t have a holiday, I just spent the time getting fit. I knew how important this pre-season period would be and I didn’t want to miss the tour.

“This is my third year here and it’s a big season for me,” he said. “I really want this. I want to play for Liverpool. I am working hard, waiting for my chance and when it comes I’ll do everything I can to take it.”
