Liverpool have been handed a huge boost with the news that Daniel Sturridge could make a surprisingly early return from injury, with the striker aiming to be fit for our match against Manchester United in just a month’s time.
We visit our old rivals at Old Trafford on September 12 – meaning that, if he makes it, he will have missed just our first four Premier League fixtures of the new campaign – against Stoke, Bournemouth, Arsenal and West Ham.
According to reports in the Daily Mirror, the 25-year-old has been given the all-clear to go back to training within the next fortnight, and will then work on building up his fitness ahead of a return to competitive action.
As the Mirror states, Sturridge was originally told that he could be out until November. The England international underwent surgery on a chronic hip problem in New York back in May and was expected to miss at least another six months of action – despite barely featuring last season due to a succession of problems.
Thankfully, the Mirror tells us that he will fly back to the UK this weekend to complete his rehab, before joining his teammates towards the end of the month.
Of course, Sturridge will return to meet seven new teammates, including two new strikers that will be rivalling him for his place in the team – Christian Benteke and Danny Ings. With Divock Origi also back at the club, following his year on loan at Lille, there’s going to be plenty of competition – in stark contrast to last year’s situation.
In many ways, this should be a plus for Sturridge, who will know better than anyone that we’ve been over-reliant on him in the past – particularly since the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona. However, all good sportsmen will want to be number one, and he’ll no doubt be eager to prove that he still deserves to be considered our main man.
Either way, the return of a striker who – at his best – should be able to score 20 Premier League goals a season, can only be considered a huge positive. Let’s hope that this report proves true in the coming weeks.
