Liverpool and Manchester United players confirmed for upcoming legends match

Liverpool and Manchester United have this week announced a host of names which will feature during a special fixture between the two clubs at the Friends Arena in Stockholm on Thursday September 3.

The Reds, who will be managed by all-time top goalscorer Ian Rush and captained by fellow Anfield favourite Robbie Fowler, have announced 14 names thus far: Jason McAteer, Dietmar Hamann, Sander Westerveld, Phil Babb, Stephane Henchoz, Luis Garcia, Vladimir Smicer, Bjorn Tore Kvarme, Patrik Berger, Jerzy Dudek, David Thompson, Salif Diao, Steve Harkness and Abel Xavier.

Hamann, Garcia, Smicer and Dudek were all members of our 2005 Champions League winning team and as the youngest members of the squad should all still have plenty to offer.

The likes of Westerveld, Henchoz and Berger played their part in our treble winning team of 2001, while we’ll all enjoy catching another glimpse of Xavier – whose hair is rumoured to be as crazy as ever.

Manchester United will be coached by former midfielder Bryan Robson, while Champions League winning defender Denis Irwin is their captain. Other names confirmed include Dwight Yorke, Ronny Johnsen, Quinton Fortune, Russell Beardsmore, Clayton Blackmore, Dion Dublin, Lee Martin, Karel Poborsky, Ben Thornley and Swedish winger Jesper Blomqvist.

Speaking after the announcement, Liverpool ambassador Rush told our official website: “These matches are notorious for their competitive rivalry and this game will be no exception. The lads are all looking forward to pulling the boots back on, and as manager I’ll personally be making sure they give it their all when they step onto that pitch.”
