Roberto Firmino played just 12 minutes of our opening Premier League weekend victory versus Stoke, but the £29m (via BBC Sport) Brazilian has impressed his team-mate Alberto Moreno enough in training to get the Spanish defender salivating at the prospect of the ex-Hoffenheim man’s first start.
Moreno told MARCA, cited in the Daily Star, that “They [the fans] will get to know him quickly.”
“Every ball he hits, with either foot, finds the back of the net!”
Firmino’s goalscoring, especially for an attacking midfielder, is impressive. Not only did he register 32 goals in the past two campaigns with Hoffenheim, but he’s bagged four in ten for Brazil and notched a hat-trick in a Melwood friendly for Liverpool on Monday.
He’s in contention for a start versus Bournemouth next Monday as Adam Lallana and Jordon Ibe failed to impress at Stoke.
If Firmino doesn’t start though, we’ve another expensive summer addition in Christian Benteke who’s just as capable of scoring goals, and Moreno has been similarly impressed with his training ground contribution.
“He’s a top player. He’s unplayable in the air and despite his size he’s really good with his feet,” Moreno continued.
“He could score a hatful of goals.”
Benteke played the full 90 against the Potters, and despite not finding the back of Jack Butland’s net, is set to make his Anfield bow on Monday versus the Cherries.
If both Benteke and Firmino start, they’ll both be disappointed to leave the field without a first goal, considering we’re hosting a favourite for relegation.
Of course – the win is the most important thing – but many of those this season will come as a result of the efforts of our two marquee summer signings.
