Liverpool boss set to hand recall to Lucas Leiva for Arsenal game

Lucas Leiva will be handed one final chance to save his ailing Liverpool career, with the Brazilian set to replace injured captain Jordan Henderson for Monday’s game with Arsenal.

The 28-year-old midfielder hasn’t so much as made the bench for either of our first two games, but with Henderson now joining teammate Joe Allen on the sidelines, manager Brendan Rodgers has little choice but to turn to his longest serving player.

Lucas, who joined Liverpool back in 2007, looked set to be on his way out of the club this summer, with the Echo confirming that Besiktas have made an approach for his services. However, Rodgers is reluctant to allow the player to leave on loan and is only interested in a straight cash deal.

According to the Echo, Emre Can is the most likely replacement for Henderson, having replaced him during the Bournemouth game after the skipper limped off – but add that Lucas is the clear favourite to take the now vacant space on our substitute bench.

Nonetheless, Rodgers could yet make a complete U-turn and decide that Lucas’ additional experience and defensive qualities could complete the perfect balance for his side, ahead of what is likely to be a tough game in North London.
