Besiktas left fuming as Brendan Rodgers performs remarkable Lucas U-turn

Besiktas have been left ‘unhappy’ after being misinformed over the future of Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva.

The Turkish giants believed they were close to striking a deal for the Brazilian midfielder until Brendan Rodgers pulled the plug and handed the player a surprise recall for our game against Arsenal on Monday night, a move which left opposing manager Senol Gunes with very little option but to look elsewhere.

According to reports in the Daily Mirror, Lucas will return to training with the rest of the Reds’ first-team on Wednesday and Rodgers now insists that the 28-year-old remains a part of his plans.

As the Mirror state, Lucas’ Liverpool career looked to be at its end when he was left out of the squad for the games against Stoke City and Bournemouth, but the injuries to Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson changed our plans.

Lucas was thrown in at the deep end at the Emirates Stadium as a result and performed admirably as part of our three-man midfield, playing the anchor role behind Emre Can and James Milner.

Besiktas were so convinced that a loan deal had been agreed that they are thought to have been stunned by Rodgers’ praise of the player after the game, where he credited Lucas with being our “best defensive midfielder”.

Safe to say that their move is now likely to have fallen through. Football is a funny game sometimes.
