Henderson and Lallana Remain Doubtful for Manchester United Clash

Despite hopes that both would be ready to face Manchester United, it appears likely that Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana will not be fit to play on Saturday.

After trying to play through a heel injury against Bournemouth, Jordan Henderson remains doubtful to return against Manchester United on Saturday, though the midfielder has reportedly responded well to treatment over the international break and his involvement hasn’t been ruled out completely just yet.

The decision, in retrospect highly regrettable, was made to allow Henderson to start against the relegation favourites on August 17th, as manager Brendan Rodgers chose to stick with his ailing captain rather than handing a start to Lucas Leiva or Emre Can. The midfielder only lasted 51 minutes before having to come off.

Since then, he has missed games against Arsenal and West Ham and was left off the England squad for the current round of internationals. According to the Liverpool Echo, a final decision on Henderson’s involvement will be made later in the week, but it appears more likely than not that he will miss the trip to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Adam Lallana is even less likely to play, though he too is yet to officially be ruled out. After going his entire Southampton career nearly injury-free, Lallana has been plagued by fitness problems since arriving on Merseyside. The hope had been last season would be an outlier, but things again haven’t started well.

Lallana, who suffered a thigh strain against Bournemouth, has now missed 15 games for Liverpool in a little over a year after missing just 12 in six seasons as a first team regular with the Saints. On top of that, even when he’s been fit enough to play he’s often found himself suffering from minor niggles or rusty from his time out.

With Philippe Coutinho unavailable due to his suspension following a pair of yellows against West Ham, it means Brendan Rodgers could find his midfield options exceptionally limited on Saturday when the two sides face off in the late kickoff.
