Liverpool fans hoping that Manchester United would face them without their best goalkeeper on Saturday got some bad news today with word that David de Gea is back in Louis van Gaal’s good books and expected to start.
Despite that it appeared his relationship with manager Louis van Gaal had broken down over the summer with Real Madrid trying to close a deal for him, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is expected to start on the weekend against Liverpool.
The United manager has reportedly set a meeting with the goalkeeper to work out any differences they may have following the summer saga that saw de Gea set to sign with the Spanish giants only for the deal to collapse after part of the paperwork to complete the transfer wasn’t submitted on time.
Prior to that, de Gea had been sent to train with the reserves and his relationship with the manager appeared irrecoverable. Now, perhaps unsurprisingly, that has changed. Van Gaal has confirmed he sees de Gea as his number one keeper and is eager to work through any differences with him.
As for de Gea, after playing for Spain against Macedonia on Tuesday night, the ‘keeper spoke of his joy at getting to play competitive football again after having been isolated at United in August. And he is hoping that he will similarly be given the chance to play once he returns to the club.
“It felt good,” said de Gea. “I really wanted to play. Now I need to kep working and see if I can have some good fortune at my club as well. My future will be the same as now: stay calm, keep working and improving. In concrete terms, just try to enjoy my football and stay happy.”
After a month on the outs with his club manager while Real Madrid move appeared imminent, de Gea wants to play for United again. Louis van Gaal wants him to play for United, too. And by all accounts the club expect they get that wish and that he will start against Liverpool on Saturday.
