Adam Bogdan set to be given the nod for League Cup clash

Adam Bogdan looks set to take the place of Simon Mignolet between the sticks for our League Cup quarter-final trip to Southampton on Wednesday night.

The Echo reports that the former Bolton Wanderers stopper will make what will be only his third appearance for the Reds, with both his previous outings also coming in the same tournament.

Bogdan was instrumental in our edgy penalty shootout win over League Two Carlisle United in Round Three, saving three of the oppositions spot kicks. He impressed again in our 1-0 victory over Bournemouth in the last-16 a month later.

Although we’re yet to see him feature in a league game, the Echo quote the 28-year-old as saying he is determined to oust Mignolet from the number one spot.

“I want to play, absolutely. I wouldn’t come here just to sit around and just to be happy that I am here. I wouldn’t be here long with that attitude.”

“I want to get into the team and to play as many games as possible. It’s a challenge which lies ahead of me, but there is always a challenge in football”.

Klopp has opted to play Mignolet in the two Europa League games he has presided over since he took charge, games which Bogdan might have expected to play a part in, but Klopp clearly feels the time is now right to take a closer look at the Hungarian.

Mignolet has deservedly had his critics at times since his arrival two seasons ago, but when he’s on form there aren’t many better shot-stoppers around. Klopp even came out in support of him a couple of weeks ago, saying that he was a better footballer than a lot of people thought.

It seems unlikely, therefore, that Bogdan will dislodge him. If Klopp doesn’t fancy Simon long-term, he will surely dip into the transfer market rather than promote our number two.

If Klopp does look elsewhere, it seems equally unlikely that Migs would accept sitting on the bench. It’s not unreasonable to presume, therefore, that Bodgan could out-stay our current number one at the club.
