James Milner says Liverpool doesn’t know how good they actually are

Liverpool’s vice-captain James Milner has taken time to praise Jurgen Klopp’s influence on the squad, but reckons his team-mates don’t actually know how good they are.

The 29-year-old is a fixture in the new manager’s team, and despite moving to Liverpool from Manchester City for increased central midfield chances, Klopp’s often used him on the left or right in his 4-2-3-1 formation.

Milner’s not complained though, and has been a reliable, if unexciting influence on the side.

“At times this season, and hopefully it is changing now, I see a talented group of players who don’t realise how good we are and how good we can be, and struggled for belief,” Milner began, reported by the Echo.

“It is never easy changing manager. I was disappointed obviously for Brendan, I think he is a top manager, came so close to glory as well. It was disappointing but unfortunately that’s football, things change quick and you have to get over it.

“Coming into a new club and one with the history of Liverpool in a new country is not easy. I think probably the hardest job is getting people to take to you straightaway.

“He has changed things with the team, training schedules and things like that. But I think he has done it in the right way as well, you can’t just come in and start blasting and changing absolutely everything right away.”

With Jordan Henderson fit, Milner will do well to keep his spot in the side, with Emre Can and Joe Allen also competing for two of the spots either side of anchorman Lucas.

The Englishman’s work-rate is exceptional, but he’s actually our highest paid player, and fans would like to see some more moments of quality.

He has scored two penalties in his past two appearances though, making it three goals for the season. He’s also registered three assists, the joint most in the squad along with Coutinho.
