LFC coach: Where we need to buy so we can win the title

Liverpool’s Under-18 coach and former captain Steven Gerrard has discussed our chances of Premier League glory and the players we ned to sign to make it happen.

According to Gerrard, we’re already pretty close, having finished fourth in 2016/17 and beating our rivals on multiple occasion.

He does however accept that a few key arrivals will boost us, naming the left-back and centre-forward position as vital areas for improvement.

What LFC are willing to spend on Aubameyang

“I think we’ve got a fantastic manager at the helm, who will hopefully attract a few big names to complete the jigsaw,” he told ESPN. “I think Liverpool are very, very close and if you look at the statistics of the top six from last season, they were the best team in terms of head-to-head.

“So Liverpool know where they need to improve and it’s consistency against the teams in the bottom half of the table — the teams that sit narrow, compact and are difficult to break down.

“Hopefully we can get the two or three big pieces of the jigsaw that are missing and I’m really confident that Liverpool can keep moving forward and there will be success just around the corner.

“I think we need someone in the left-back position. James has done a fantastic job out there, but it would be nice to have another option out there as well,” Gerrard added.

“And maybe one more attacking player to give some more firepower and help unlock the defences that are really narrow and compact. I don’t think we need major reconstruction, I think it’s just a couple of pieces of the jigsaw left and I’m really happy with where we are at the moment.”

The likes of Ghoulam, Soares and Zeco have been linked to Liverpool since we ended our pursuit of Ryan Sessegnon, but as of yet, there’s been no major developments at left-back.

Mo Salah is likely to arrive as our new winger, but time will tell if Klopp feels the need to supplement the offence with a striker as well. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is being touted, but is more than likely a pipe dream.

There’s likely to be a top new centre-back and midfielder purchased as well. Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita are the priorities here, but we’ll do well to get one, let alone both.
