Klopp Talk: We Were Dominant

The Liverpool manager praised his side after avenging last season’s heavy lost at Wembley.

A first win for Jürgen Klopp at Wembley, a first Premier League away goal for Gini Wijnaldum and an impressive five wins on the bounce to cement their position at the top of the league table. One would be hard pressed to fault Liverpool for much as they dispatched fellow title contenders, Tottenham by a margin of 2-1. Most impressive however, is that the Reds are winning on the back of a rock-solid defense and an industrious midfield rather than simply leaning on their attacking prowess as in times past.

Klopp thought as much, lauding his team for their balanced performance, “That was our best game of the season and the performance was much better than the result,” the Liverpool manager said speaking to Sky Sports after the game.

“We deserved to win that game today. Over 85 minutes we were really dominant.

“With and without the ball we caused them massive problems. The things they usually do usually work, but they didn’t today. The boys stuck to our plan today and it was really good—everybody worked so hard in what was a good performance.

His side are even yet to hit top gear going forward, with Premier League record goal scorer, Mohamed Salah in particular cutting a frustrated figure at times. While Roberto Firmino was able to get on the score sheet, the front three spurned several big chances to put the visitors three, four or five ahead, leading to some nervy extra time defending after Erik Lamela pulled one back late for the Londoners.

“That was a tough game, man!” Klopp admitted. “Two good teams, two big teams, football as it should be. We won the game and if we win at Tottenham it’s a big result.

“The players did the job and they worked unbelievable hard, and I’m really proud of them.”

With the first of a series of tough fixtures dealt with, the Reds will get a short rest before welcoming French giants, Paris Saint-Germain to Anfield on Tuesday for their opening Champions League group stage match.
