Gini Wijnaldum: Every Game Is Different

He’s just taking things one game at a time.

Gini Wijnaldum scored a goal in the Premier League away from home. It finally happened. Liverpool are invincible.

Jokes aside, Wijnaldum’s conversion to a holding midfielder is one of the more pleasant surprises of the season so far. The Dutchman looks surprisingly comfortable receiving the ball in deeper positions, and this leads to greater involvement from the player many had dismissed in the past as a “ghost”.

The player is obviously delighted about his start to the season, but he’s keeping his feet very much on the ground at the moment.

“I don’t really want to speak about statements because every game is different”, Wijnaldum told the official Liverpool website. “Now is Tottenham, other teams will come. A game is a game, it’s not really a statement. You can win today and lose another game.

“We just must make sure that we will not lose these games easily and that we have to do a lot of things to win these games. We have to be concentrated, give everything, and play good football. Then we can win these games. But we need to focus on those things and not ‘giving statements”.

Elsewhere, the Dutchman talked about how Wembley was a “good place” to get his first away goal, and that he’s “happy that [he] could help the team to win this game with a goal”. Talking about the Spurs game itself, he said it was “really close until the end, I think.

“During the game we made a few mistakes. Defensively, Moura had a big chance, and at the end with the goal that we conceded. We had a lot of big chances and we could have had more [goals] if we were good on the last pass. That was the downside of the game, but overall we played a good game. We defended quite well and we created a lot of chances.”

Gini Wijnaldum is really looking an important part of the side now, perhaps more than at any other point in his Liverpool career. That he takes such a reasonable view of things shows the work ethic of not just himself but the whole team.

Keep up the good work, Gini.
