Wait, is he including himself in “we?”
Liverpool fans will leave last night’s horror show justified in the belief that the three man midfield of Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner, and Adam Lallana absolutely should never play together again. Lallana, in particularly, has come under a lot of flack during his cameo appearances so far this season, failing to impress on either side of the ball.
Regardless, Lallana believes that this side will bounce back.
“As players we’ve got to take responsibility. It was a slow start all round really, and we gave them far too many opportunities – especially from set-pieces,” Lallana told the club’s official website.
“We had chances and we came out at the start of the second half which was better, but we weren’t ruthless enough and we weren’t patient enough.”
Does that “better start” to the second half include nearly giving away a penalty, or are we talking about after that bit?
“They time-wasted and we lost momentum but to come in 2-0 down wasn’t like us and we’ve got to take full responsibility and make sure that doesn’t happen again. It’s still in our hands and if we win our next two games we go through, but it was a great opportunity missed for us.
“Of course there will be a reaction. It’s not the first time we’ve lost games and it’s about how you react and how you bounce back but we are thoroughly disappointed to come away with nothing.”
Klopp has some major rethinking to do if he wants to ensure that a couple of disappointing results don’t become a midseason slump that sees them out of the races for the two most important competitions.
His plan for the next time out will no doubt be buoyed by the return of midfielders Naby Keita and Jordan Henderson to the first team, and by playing highly-porous, bottom-of-the-pile Fulham at Anfield.
