Funny, because tonight’s UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea is a chance to do precisely that.
Liverpool’s historic septuple was dashed ten days ago, as the Reds came up just short against Manchester City in the Community Shield. It’s OK. It wasn’t even a real trophy, anyway. Really more of a glorified friendly.
However, the sextuple is still very much on, and this time a real trophy is up for grabs, the UEFA Super Cup. How do we know it’s real? It’s being counted on the wall at Melwood, next to our 18 League Titles, 6 (SIX) European Cups, etc. The Community Shield can get in the bin (or more appropriately, into the oil barrel). Super Cup is where it’s at.
Liverpool midfielder Fabinho certainly appears to be taking the competition seriously.
“It’s a chance to start the season well with another European title,” Fabinho told UEFA in an interview. “It’ll be a good fixture against a team that we, of course, have been competing against for titles domestically as well in England.
”I think [winning] it would give us more confidence. Every time you win a title, your name goes down once again in the club’s history. Of course, with the team that we have, our mentality and ambition is to win.
”So we’re going to compete for this title. I think it will help our confidence greatly.”
I, for one, am glad that Fabinho is already worried about his Liverpool legacy at 25 years of age. Gotta start padding out that “honors” section on your Wiki.
Jokes aside, there is some truth to the matter. Liverpool players are defined by their trophy haul. While a European Cup will always ensure that you’re remembered fondly, the true club legends have a rather lengthy and shiny list of the biggest prizes that they brought back to Merseyside.
The Super Cup isn’t the kind of trophy that the club will parade around the city in an open-topped bus. But it is still a major honor. Fabinho and the Reds have a chance to change that “3” to “4” on the wall at Melwood, an opportunity that doesn’t come around very often, even for the best squads in the history of this storied club.
