The UEFA Super Cup win puts Liverpool back on their perch as the most successful team in England.
The scenes were a bit more subdued after captain Jordan Henderson lifted his second trophy for the Reds. It is, of course, understandable. The UEFA Super Cup, as nice as it is, is not as important as either of the trophies that can be won to qualify for the one-off final. It is especially not as significant as ol’ Big Ears, i.e. the biggest prize in club football. The prize, incidentally, that we’ve won more than all other Premier League Clubs combined.
But the UEFA Super Cup is a prize, and Liverpool have won it. In doing so, they’ve equalled Real Madrid with a tally of four Super Cups, just one behind Barcelona and AC Milan. Good company to keep, that.
The win is special for another reason: it brings Liverpool’s tally of major honors to 46, one more than Manchester United (no lads, you don’t get to count the glorified friendlies that are Community Shields). We’re back on our fucking perch, lads. Now just sort out the business of winning a few more league titles to really drive home the point.
After 120 minutes of early-season football and a penalty shootout that left us in suspense until the last kick, boys in Red looked more relieved than anything. Georginio Wijnaldum had the honors of bringing the latest big of silverware into the locker room, and some mad bastard—we’ll assume Roberto Firmino—was screaming in the background for “Música!”
It certainly didn’t go off as it did after Madrid, which is probably for the best considering we have a Premier League match in just two days. That was nice, but let’s see if we can add more to that beautiful wall in Melwood.
