The Brazilian midfielder understands the stakes of Sunday’s top of the table clash.
Liverpool have a six point lead over the current champions, and a win at home could see that balloon to a much more pleasant nine points.
Fabinho, who has been one of Klopp’s most consistent performers this season, understands how important this match will be for the fans and potentially for the outcome of the season.
“It’s a game that everybody is looking forward to and everybody is excited to see,” Fabinho told the official site. “We are two teams this year and last year that have showed they are the strongest teams in the league and the most consistent. It’s first versus second place and there’s no doubt that it will be a great game.”
The only game that Liverpool lost last season was to Manchester City, but Fabinho hits back at the idea that their one defeat cost them the title.
“I don’t think the outcome last season was based on the results against Man City,” Fabinho argued. “But if we beat them then we will have a large points advantage over them, which will be important for us. But this game is always a bit more special because we have the chance to pick up points and stop a direct rival from picking up points. So we’re going to do all we can to win, but I’m not sure if this result will define the outcome of the season.”
If it doesn’t define the outcome of the season, it will surely define the narrative around it, particularly going into the international break. It’s never fun to spend those two weeks stewing over a loss for your team, reading the think pieces about how it’s all over. So let’s hope that Liverpool pull off a victory over their rivals for the sake of our blood pressure over the break and to set up the festive period moving forward.
