'Extremely erratic': Ally McCoist thinks Chelsea have a player who is just like Liverpool's Darwin Nunez

Ally McCoist has now been comparing one Chelsea player to Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez following the weekend’s action.

Despite their best efforts, Mauricio Pochettino’s side ultimately showed their lack of experience, and perhaps cutting edge in the final third against Manchester City.

Unless it’s through Cole Palmer, right now it feels as if Chelsea doesn’t necessarily have the edge to win such games.

Pochettino saw his team play well in aspects, but sadly it was the same old story of missed opportunities.

Back in the Premier League, Liverpool were able to overcome Chelsea’s west London neighbours Fulham on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side certainly aren’t in the driving seat when it comes to the title race, but they’re definitely not out of the conversation either.

Darwin Nunez was one of a number of high-profile players the Liverpool manager left on the bench for the game.

And when speaking on talkSPORT with Jeff Stelling today, Ally McCoist compared the striker’s struggles to that of Nicolas Jackson at Chelsea.

Ally McCoist says Nicolas Jackson is just as erratic as Darwin Nunez at Liverpool

Jeff Stelling initially raised the comparison and begged the question of whether either Nicolas Jackson or Darwin Nunez could be taught to improve their finishing.

He said: “I think when he [Jackson] first came in, people were saying that he is not really an out-and-out centre-forward, but the person I look at and compare him with is Darwin Nunez, who causes the opposition all sorts of problems but is not a natural finisher.

“Can you teach a player to be a natural finisher?”

McCoist then replied: “When you look at the two of them and you bring Nunez into the equation, the two of them definitely have something in common, and that is a lack of composure about the finishing.

“Both of them are extremely erratic, so you can work on their finishing, of course you can, and they can work on their finishing, but they have to get into their minds.

“When I look at a striker, and good strikers always know just before they finish, they have got a split second to compose themselves, to compose themselves before they finish.

“These two guys, who I have mentioned there, do not have that and they are very erratic in front of goal.”

Don’t judge this Chelsea team until Christopher Nkunku is back fit

Of course, there is merit to McCoist’s comparison between Jackson and Liverpool’s Nunez.

But when judging Chelsea this season and all of their shortcomings, it really is important to remember the player they’ve been missing, Christopher Nkunku.

The Frenchman was intended to provide the finishing and end product that both Chelsea and Jackson have been lacking.

Cole Palmer has done a brilliant job and making up for his absence, but it’s impossible to do alone.

And as we’ve seen in brief snippets between his injuries, Nkunku does have the ability to take the pressure off of Jackson in front of goal.

Jackson would have been allowed more chance to settle without such a burden on his goalscoring, a player who is still young at 22-years-old.

That being said, Joe Cole has actually just compared one Chelsea player to Jordan Henderson.
