Mamadou Sakho linked with bizarre season-long loan move

We told you earlier this week that Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho was being linked with a move to Roma, but now it seems that the Italian giants are only interested if it’s a loan deal, and don’t want to sign the player long-term.

According to reports from talkSPORT, Roma boss Rudi Garcia only sees Sakho as a ‘stop-gap’ solution to their problems in central defence, and feels that a deal can be done after the Frenchman was left out of the squad for our opening game of the new Premier League season last weekend.

The source also states that Roma would ‘not be willing to include an option to buy clause in any future deal after the loan period nor pay a loan fee up front’ – that seems pretty hopeful to say the least.

Liverpool paid £18m for Sakho’s services back in the summer of 2013 (via BBC Sport), making him the most expensive defender in our club’s history until Dejan Lovren arrived from Southampton the following year.

Unfortunately, two injury-hit years have restricted his impact at Anfield and he’s started the new campaign out of favour – with Lovren and Martin Skrtel the preferred centre-back pairing for much of pre-season and again against Stoke on Sunday.

However, with Kolo Toure the only other established option at centre-half, we’d be truly astounded if anything were to happen with this one. Sakho is still a valued member of the Liverpool squad and, while he may have to wait for his chance, should still have an important part to play over the next twelve months.
