Joao Carlos Teixeira claims that although Under-21s drew – ‘I played well’

Joao Carlos Teixeira has revealed that he was pleased with his own performance during Wednesday’s mini-Merseyside derby, which ended with Everton coming from behind to snatch a 3-3 draw.

The 22-year-old Portuguese, who enjoyed a successful loan spell with Championship club Brighton last season, is hoping to earn his chance in Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool first-team over the coming weeks. So, although he was disappointed with last night’s result, he feels that he has plenty to be proud of.

“It’s disappointing [the result] but it was good for me, I played well, and I need to get fit. In my position I always want to score or assist, that’s my job and it’s what I try to do every single game I’m on the pitch.”

Teixeira, who was also our Academy Player of the Year during the 2013-14 campaign, scored the second of our goals during the game in Southport – ending a fine run past a couple of defenders with a shot into the bottom corner.

Fellow starlets Harry Wilson and Sergi Canos also found the net, while Teixeira was only denied a second by an incredible goal line block by an Everton defender. However, speaking to our official website after the game, the youngster insisted that the team needs to improve.

“We started very well and the first half was good but we weren’t good enough to [stay] ahead of them and we drew,” he continued. “We [will] learn from our mistakes and we weren’t good enough to win this game. It’s a different game against Everton, it’s always good to play these derby games and I enjoyed it.”

The youngster, who made his only Premier League appearance for Liverpool back in early 2014 – coming on as a substitute against Fulham – was part of the touring party when the Reds visited the Far East this summer and impressed with his performances.

He told reporters that he was thrilled to be included on the trip and expressed his determination to earn more chances such as that in the future.

“When you play with good players you always improve,” he added. “It’s always good to be around Melwood and the pre-season was good, I enjoyed it, I played a few games and I tried to do my best.”
