Nathaniel Clyne talks Anfield: ‘It put the hairs up on the back of my neck’

Nathaniel Clyne has revealed that he was blown away by the atmosphere at Anfield when he made his first home appearance as a Liverpool player on Monday evening against Bournemouth.

“It definitely put the hairs up on the back of my neck,” he told our official website. “It makes you want to play better for the fans and put in a good performance. It was a good feeling to play at Anfield for Liverpool. It was a good atmosphere. They are the 12th man and we can use that to build and get better.”

The full-back was in fine form as Brendan Rodgers’ side scored a 1-0 victory over the Cherries and maintained our 100% start to the new campaign. He’ll likely face a tougher test this coming Monday, when we take on Arsenal in North London, but he’s seemingly confident that he can build on his recent success.

“It’s important to start the season by getting points onto the board,” he continued. “We’ve done that – two wins out of two. It gives us a platform to build on. We haven’t really been firing on all cylinders, but that will come from players playing together and knowing everyone’s abilities.

“It was a good, solid performance from us on Monday. We played well and took the game to Bournemouth. We created opportunities and I think we probably could have won the game by more.

“I don’t feel that we were stretched much, they didn’t have any clear chances. It shows how we were in defence and as a unit, and how organised we were in our defensive shape. We’re looking to build on that throughout the whole season.”

Clyne has settled in well at Liverpool. He’s benefited from signing for the club early on in the window and getting a solid pre-season campaign under his belt, which set him up nicely for the start of the Premier League.

He appears to be particularly happy about having rejoined former Southampton teammates Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana, who have no doubt helped him with the settling in process, and the 24-year-old already feels very much like part of the furniture on Merseyside.

“I feel comfortable here, I feel settled and that I’m at the right club,” he added. “I’m playing with quality players and it helps me out to play with solid players. It makes me feel comfortable.

“There’s a good team spirit. There are a lot of leaders in the team that help and talk, and help the young lads as well. With the likes of [Jordan] Henderson and Milly, who are good team leaders, it’s good to have those sorts of players in the team.”

Clyne will no doubt be hoping that playing for Liverpool will help take his career to the next level. Having already earned five caps for England his name is firmly in the frame for a spot at Euro 2016, but a good season at Anfield could help truly establish him as our country’s first choice right-back.

So far, so good!
