Jordan Rossiter surprisingly came on to replace Lucas against Arsenal on Monday, showing just how much faith Brendan Rodgers has in the teenage Scouser.
Rossiter harried the opposition tirelessly, and did everything expected of him during his short cameo.
After the game, the delight on the player’s face was clear to see and he literally couldn’t help beaming at the interviewer.
“I found out I was travelling down on Sunday. I didn’t expect to be coming on in the last 10 minutes, especially at 0-0. But I was made up, over the moon,” the midfielder told Sky Sports.
“[The manager] called me and said he wanted me to go on for Lucas, with [James] Milner dropping deep and then me pushing on a bit.
“He said to work hard and enjoy it, and to make sure I kept it tight. We got the result in the end.
“The lads were brilliant. We were thinking ‘how aren’t we a goal up, or two or three?’ Their goalkeeper was man of the match, I thought – that says it all.
“They were brilliant and it’s only going to help us going into Saturday and the season.”
It’s so refreshing to see a youngster that happy with simply playing football. Rossiter has been with Liverpool since he was seven-years-old, and we hope that he continues to get chances with the first-team this term. He’s clearly got the desire and willingness to learn and improve, which is vital.
With a League Cup fixture against Carlisle coming up, that might be the player’s best chance of starting.
