Liverpool top agent spending list thanks to Firmino

Figures published today revealed we spent a mammoth £14.3 million on agents fees over the last 12 months – the highest amount out of all 20 Premier League clubs.

Manchester United were second on the list having spent £13.9 million, while Manchester City were third with £12.4 million.

Having not signed anyone last January, the fees were all racked up during the summer spending spree, as we added Joe Gomez, Adam Bogdan, Danny Ings, James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne, and Christian Benteke to our ranks.

The Echo report that a big chunk of the £14.3 was spent on the £29 million transfer of Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino, as we had to buy-out various third-party ownerships to get the deal over the line.

They also report than we actually spent £7,000 less this season than last season. At that time, Chelsea were the biggest spenders, splashing out more than £16 million on fees.

Numbers like this make you seriously question the state of modern football. Why should agents get paid so much money? What do they do to deserve it? What purpose do they serve?

Reds fans don’t have to look any further than the summer shenanigans surrounding Raheem Sterling’s protracted move to Man City to realise what a toxic influence they’ve become. If Aidy Ward didn’t exist, there’s a good chance we’d still be watching Sterling strut his stuff in front of The Kop every weekend.

Is it time for Europe’s top clubs to join forces in an attempt remove agents from the game, or at least significantly reduce their influence?

What do you think the solution is? Let us know in the comments below.
