Christian Benteke linked with £25m move to European heavyweights

Liverpool’s out of luck striker Christian Benteke has been strongly linked with a summer move to Serie A giants Juventus in the Mirror.

Tom Hopkinson writes that Jurgen Klopp’s told Liverpool’s hierarchy that we should sell for a figure near £25m, £7.25m less than we bought him off Aston Villa.

The powerful striker is very much out of favour under the German, who starts Daniel Sturridge as his first choice forward and uses Divock Origi as primary backup.

Even Roberto Firmino plays as a false-9 ahead of Benteke, who is effectively Liverpool’s fourth choice striker under Klopp.

The report suggests Juventus are long-term admirers of Benteke and want him to replace current target-man Mario Mandzukic – who’s turning 30 soon.

For £25m, Liverpool should snap Juve’s hands off. It’s clear Benteke’s attributes do not suit Klopp’s style, and having splashed such a hefty sum on him, we should take the opportunity to cut our losses.

Benteke’s Liverpool failure is not entirely his fault. He’s not received enough minutes and was signed by our former manager Brendan Rodgers, but for the good of the club and the player – this seems sensible business.

That’s if the report has any legs, of course.
