'Nothing at all': Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool aren't actually pursuing 'world-class' manager despite speculation

1 week ago 29

Liverpool are currently on the lookout for a new manager to take the reins from Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

The Reds boss shocked the football world earlier this year when he announced his intention to step down from the Anfield role.

Liverpool were heavily linked with Xabi Alonso following Klopp’s announcement, but he has since told the press he intends to stay with Bayer Leverkusen.

With that in mind, the Reds have focused their efforts elsewhere, with Ruben Amorim said to be a leading candidate for the job.

Amorim isn’t the only manager Liverpool have been linked with, however. Other names have been doing the rounds.

For instance, we’ve seen reports claiming the Reds are after Bologna’s Thiago Motta and former Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac.

Fabrizio Romano has now issued an update on Liverpool’s apparent interest in the above coaches. And perhaps it’s good news for those who only want Amorim.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about links between Liverpool, Thiago Motta and Niko Kovac?

Put simply, the transfer insider – writing on GiveMeSport – has rubbished links between the Reds and Kovac, saying there’s “nothing at all” on this front.

As for Motta, Romano said he’s “not getting anything concrete” with those links, perhaps suggesting there may be interest, but nothing beyond that.

“Honestly, I didn’t hear anything about these two names,” said Romano.

“With Niko Kovac, nothing at all, and also with Thiago Motta at the moment I’m not getting anything concrete with Liverpool.

“He’s doing a fantastic job at Bologna, but at the moment I’m not hearing anything serious in terms of contact with English clubs in general.”

Kovac has been deemed a ‘world-class’ manager by the Bundesliga website in the past, and he’s currently without a club, so Liverpool wouldn’t have to pay compensation with him.

However, Wolfsburg recently sacked him, and considering how high the pressure is at Liverpool, they’d surely prefer someone whose stock is at an all-time high.

Meanwhile, Motta has been impressing with Bologna, getting them punching above their weight. However, he doesn’t have much experience on the silverware front.

Amorim seems like the best shout, considering he’s been impressing and winning trophies with a team that faces extreme pressure for silverware every season.
